Tomoe Gozen

This figure was commissioned by a collector not long after I completed "Daimyo". At that time, I was very interested in the history of Feudal Japan and had traveled to Japan pretty frequently.
The bust is a resin kit produced by Pili Pili miniatures of Belgium. As is my usual technique I painted her using multiple media - Acrylic base, Oils, more acrylics, inks and virtually anything that can get the job done. I often paint and repaint a figure until I get the result I am looking for and this piece was certainly no exception.
As you can see below, I painted the face first using a base flesh tone and then layers on the white make up - this was so that she wouldn't look too clown like.
I would say the most challenging part was her crown-being resin it is very fragile and getting in the nooks was difficult because the casting was not ideal. I ended up having to break the pieces off, clean them, then replace them onto the figure.
Overall, I enjoyed painting the piece and she won gold medals at various US shows and made the cover of a few magazines as you can see below....
